The Terezin concentration camp tour is a five-hour trip to this former Nazi concentration camp just north of Prague. The town was founded in 1780 by Emperor Josef II. Built as part of an ingenious system of Late Baroque military fortresses to protect the Kingdom of Bohemia. The small fortress was later converted into a prison at the beginning of the 19th century. During the period of Nazi occupation of World War II in 1940 the town of Terezin was turned into a Jewish ghetto by the Gestapo. The town and fortress of Terezin were being used by the Nazis as a transit camp for Jews and all others deemed enemies of the Third Reich from all over Europe.
It is said 160,000 prisoners passed through Terezin. Around 36,000 lost their lives within the walls of this former Nazi concentration camp. Since this tragic period in history the name Terezin has been forever etched into the world’s conscience. The tour is essential for visitors interested in the history of World War II and the Holocaust.
