St Valentines day in Prague. You will not find a more romantic city in Europe to celebrate this day with the one you love. Cobbled streets, golden spires and quiet streets are perfect for a lover`s stroll. February 14th, the Czech nation have only been celebrating this holiday of love since the collapse of Communism rule in 1989. Before that it was forbidden to embrace any ‘western’ orientated celebrations.
Legend says the day was named after a Catholic martyr ‘St Valentine’, a priest during the third century in Rome. Apparently Emperor Claudius lay down a law banning marriage for young men. He believed that single soldiers made better soldiers with no wives or families to care about. Valentine defied Emperor Claudius and married young lovers in secret, after this was discovered the Emperor ordered Valentine`s execution. So now in modern times the tradition of love on this day is carried on as St Valentines Day. And where better than this romantic setting to celebrate St Valentines Day in Prague!
