Enjoy the Prague Easter holiday tradition in the Czech Republic. At Easter in Prague there are lots of little markets selling Czech hand made items. Easter in Prague is known as Velikonoce in Czech language is a celebrated religious period resurrected since the collapse of Communism in 1989. Before that date under the communist rule it was known as a celebration of spring starting. However since then Easter Sunday and Monday are both celebrated and are on the national holiday list.
The Czech customs at Easter are based on older traditions. The main one the ‘kraslice’ decorated egg and the ‘pomlazka’, made from willow to form a whip. The tradition being that men whip the women they find attractive and in return the woman gives the man a decorated egg. The reason being it was believed that whipping a woman after winter would bring a good harvest. The egg represents a symbol of fertility and on Easter Monday it is whpping day. During the Prague Easter holiday you will still see this tradition being carried out and in the Old Town Square ‘Staromestska namesti’ the little traditional markets still sell these items.
